GCS Bursary Program

Dr. Harold Shank, Executive Director

Since its beginning in 2018, Global Christian Studies (GCS) has helped 24 church leaders from outside the United States earn a Master of Arts in Christian Ministry (MACM) from Harding School of Theology. In spring 2025, GCS partnered with a second school, Heritage Christian University in Accra, Ghana.

Beginning this year, Heritage started a fully accredited Master of Arts in Christian Studies (MACS). Twenty-seven Ghanaian students began their studies in February. The GCS Bursary Program will fully sponsor three of these students. A bursary is a monetary award given to students to fund their educational programs. The GCS Bursary is need-based and nonrepayable. Three of Heritage’s students will be chosen in April 2025 and will complete their program by December.

The MACS program aims to help prepare Ghanaians, who work with more than 20 state universities and colleges in Ghana, to lead in local campus ministry. Young Christians in Ghana are increasingly earning university and graduate degrees and have started new congregations near their campuses. Graduates of the Heritage MACS program will serve those churches.

Heritage offers undergraduate degrees in theology and ministry, business and leadership, nursing, engineering, and applied science, along with three graduate degrees. It is accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission. The Heritage Master of Arts in Christian Studies is believed to be the first fully accredited master’s degree offered by schools associated with Churches of Christ outside the United States. Dr. Samuel Twumasi-Ankrah is the founding and current president of Heritage. Before establishing the university, Twumasi-Ankrah served 32 years as the minister for the Nsawam Road Church of Christ in Accra.

GCS looks forward to a multiyear association with Heritage Christian University as we partner to provide qualified leaders for Churches of Christ outside the United States.
